A World War II movie, a Boston gangster, an international cast, everyone's favorite beauty pageant entrant, and Queen Elizabeth will compete for Best Picture in the 79th Annual Academy Awards, to be broadcast February 25th. The nominees were announced this morning and a collection of familiar competitors - Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet - were joined by some new faces - Rinko Kikuchi, Abigail Breslin - while a few big names were omitted - Brad Pitt, Jack Nicholson - in what's shaping up to be one of the most interesting competitions for Oscar in years. In the big category, Babel, The Departed, Letters From Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine, and The Queen will compete for the main prize and, right now, the big winner is anyone's guess, but the big loser this morning has to be the shocking omission of Golden Globe Best Picture winner for Best Picture - Comedy or Musical for Dreamgirls.
