Talk Around Town

Tis the season for awards – and no, I don’t mean all the bejeweled and begowned goings-on in Tinseltown. Although I was positively reeling – in the best way - when the Golden Globes decided and wisely in our mind to give our East End neighbor Alec Baldwin the best actor nod for television for his role in 30 Rock. Alec has been long underrated for his genuine comedic abilities. And I was doubly thrilled when America Ferarra, the bright star of Ugly Betty, gave every girl who is not a size 2 and sporting designer drag a little hope and a reason to cheer.

Closer to home, talent of another sort has been recognized in our community. Artist and sculptor David Slater was recently selected for an award by the prestigious Pollock Krasner Foundation and the brilliant architect and environmentalist Eva Growney was awarded a special AIA grant for a feasibility study on the preservation of the historic Black Duck Lodge and its sprawling property in Flanders.
And there’s more on East End honors. For over 35 years, Women in Communications has recognized extraordinary achievement in publishing, broadcast, newspapers, magazines and marketing, This year’s eight honorees to join the ranks of previous recipients such as Barbara Walters and Katie Couric include several prominent and popular Hamptonites. Gossip guru Cindy Adams (I worship at her Manolo clad feet) and style maven of all that is tasteful and beautiful, Pamela Fiori, editor in chief of Town & Country will be applauded at the organization’s Matrix Awards Luncheon along with fellow honorees Today Show co-host Meredith Viera, author Joan Didion, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia CEO Susan Lyne, Citibank’s Lisa Caputo, columnist and super blogger Ariana Huffington, and the Studio Museum in Harlem’s Thelma Golden.
