Men’s basketball to play Southern Illinois in BracketBuster
ESPN announced the pairings for the fifth annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters event on Feb. 16-17. Butler has been paired with the Missouri Valley’s Southern Illinois University. The Bulldogs have also been chosen to be one of the 13 televised games. There are 102 teams participating in this year’s BracketBuster.
Butler continues winning ways
The Bulldogs went into a hostile environment Saturday in Detroit and came out with a big Horizon League Conference win against the Detroit Mercy Titans. The first half saw Butler sprint to an early lead behind nine three point baskets in the first half. The Bulldogs took a seemingly comfortable 14 point lead into halftime but the Titans never gave up.
Women's basketball splits games against conference foes
Butler let an early lead slip away Thursday losing 81-64 to UW-Green Bay, but bounced back strong Saturday to defeat UW-Milwaukee 81-74.
Overall, Gardner give strong performances for Butler track
Butler’s Track and Field team competed at the Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana University on Friday and Saturday. Senior Scott Overall and junior Genni Gardner both finished the meet with outstanding performances.

Unless you live under a rock, and by that I mean something along the lines of Mount Everest, you’re probably aware that the Colts are headed to Superbowl XLI. What makes the game even more intriguing on campus is the matchup, which pairs one of league’s best offenses against arguably the nation’s top defensive team, the Chicago Bears.

Pursuing that rock analogy, most Butler students also know a thing or two about the Bears: all things considered, it always seems like over half of the campus is from “the region.” Although many analysts are favoring the Colts this coming Sunday, let it not be forgotten that once the playoffs began Indianapolis wasn’t expected to make it this far. So, what exactly happened that led the Colts to the Superbowl?

The answer is simple: staunch defensive performances from the 32nd (last) ranked team in the NFL against the run during the regular season. Including a 35 yard run by New England’s Corey Dillon last weekend, the Colts defense gave up only 93 rushing yards throughout the game in a 38-34 victory. With the return of safety Bob Sanders, the Indianapolis secondary has improved significantly, especially in run coverage. This is essentially the very same defense from last year’s team, which played very well during the 2005 regular season but has struggled all year long. Historically, the Colts offense has had to bail out the defense in close games, but this year the script has been flipped.

It shouldn’t go unmentioned that the Colts also signed a previous archrival and pretty much the most clutch kicker in NFL history this offseason. Former New England Patriot Adam Vinatieri has been absolutely perfect during the playoffs this year, making all of his field goal attempts including a record tying five against the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago. With the defense playing as well as it has been and important role players stepping up when they’re needed, it seems as though this year’s team peaked at just the right time.

This is an intriguing matchup and should be a game for the ages. Although it would be difficult to trump last week’s barnburner against New England, it’s always a lot more fun to see a hard-fought match than a blowout. Best luck to the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday, and all should hope that this is a game that you’ll be telling your grandchildren about… it doesn’t get any better than this in Indianapolis.

Wild Hogs and Pride $2.6 million dollar Superbowl ads
Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - zap2it - zap2it.com

Eddie Murphy in 'Norbit'From "The Matrix" to "Hulk," recent years have seen Super Bowl ads have the potential to either launch or crush a big movie. Not this year.

According to Variety, only two movie ads are confirmed for Sunday's (Feb. 4) Super Bowl, down from the eight trailers that showed during last year's big game. The trade paper says that while a few more movies may sneak in at the last minute, their teasers won't show until the fourth quarter of the game between the Bears and Colts.

During the game, the only movies considered worthy of the $2.6 million price tag are Lionsgate's inner-city swimming movie "Pride" and Disney's motorcycle comedy "Wild Hogs." the two films premiere on March 23 and March 2 respectively.

Pregamme spots have been purchased for February releases "Norbit" from Paramount and "Ghost Rider" from Sony.

Trailers during last year's Super Bowl included clips from eventual hits like "Talladega Nights," as well as the underperforming "Mission: Impossible III" and the downright disappointing "Poseidon."

The Variety story reports that the lack of trailers this year is actually a return of sorts to the more innocent time a decade ago when only "Independence Day" advertised during the Super Bowl. That worked out pretty well for the Will Smith vehicle and seven films advertised the next year.

Superbowl Trailers Aren't What They Used to Be

Posted Jan 30th 2007 10:32AM by Erik Davis

This Sunday, most of us will be watching the Superbowl. Out of those folks, at least half (myself included) will be watching solely for the commercials ... and maybe for a tiny bit of actual football. Let's face it, the Superbowl commercials have grown in popularity over the years, to a point where they're more appealing than the actual game. Crazy. While the Coke and Pepsi commercials are great and all, when I was growing up it was all about the movie trailers -- or, more specifically, which summer blockbusters would unleash their first TV spots during the big game.

At $2.6 million for a 30-second spot, this year the major studios have decided to steer clear from promoting the big summer monsters, in exchange for those films that desperately need eyes from a mass audience. Those of you looking forward to catching a Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End trailer will have to wait till a later date -- all Disney is giving us is a trailer for Wild Hogs and (most likely) Meet the Robinsons. Shrek the Third and Spider-Man 3 will also be absent from the big game, all you comic book geeks are getting is a TV spot for Ghost Rider ... and during the pre-game, no less. Other than that, Lionsgate will debut a trailer for the film Pride during the first quarter ... and that's it.

While we're only a few months away from one of the biggest summers ever, you'd think we'd get a little bit more than Wild Hogs, right? Back in the day, the studios always debuted the trailers for their big films during the Superbowl -- and that's why I watched -- but now with internet marketing so cheap and effective, it looks like those days are long gone. Sad, ain't it?

In case you're interested, here's a list of spots we'll be getting during this year's Superbowl.

James Bassett's Superbowl Preview
By James Bassett - January 29 2007

The game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears at the Dolphins Stadium, Miami, on 4th February 2007 has been billed as the most lop-sided quarterback battle in Super Bowl history.
But while it’s true that the Colts are blessed with one of the NFL’s very best quarterbacks, and Chicago have the occasionally nerve-stricken Rex Grossman, there’s much more to the game than a duel between Indianapolis’ number 18 and Bears’ number 8.

Manning is, unquestionably, the more accomplished of the two: a future hall-of-famer appearing in his 13th playoff game. Grossman, meanwhile, is unfairly being touted as the worst quarterback in Super Bowl history, before the teams even take to the field.

While Manning is indisputably the better quarterback, Grossman, for all his inconsistencies, played a big part in the Bears team winning the NFC North at a canter and finishing the regular season 13-3. It’s also worth remembering that they were, at one point, 7-0 and being compared to the legendary 1985 Bears team.

But it’s true that the Bears are unlikely to rely on Grossman to secure them a first Super Bowl victory for twenty-two years. So, for Chicago to stand a chance, he is going to need to hand the ball off early and hope that the one-two punch of Cedric Benson and Thomas Jones that gashed the Saints for 183 yards in the NFC conference championship can get close to the 173 yard average that the Colts allowed against the run in the regular season (a league worst).

While the Indianapolis front seven have tightened up in the post-season, the undersized Dan Klecko, Raheem Brock and Anthony McFarland are likely to be relentlessly attacked by Chicago and will find it tough against the nasty, aggressive trio of Olin Kreutz, Roberto Garza and Ruben Brown.

Chicago will also hope to exploit the Colts’ susceptibility to long kick-off returns. Indianapolis have allowed an average of 24.3 yards from kick-offs and the Bears’ rookie return specialist Devin Hester, who returned kick-offs for 528 yards this season, will hope to cause them significant damage.

If Hester can provide Grossman with a short field, the quarterback will be under much less pressure to deliver, as the Bears’ Robbie Gould was the NFL’s top kicker in the regular season with 143 points. His incredible 49-yarder against Seattle in the first round of the playoffs proves that Grossman doesn’t necessarily have to get the ball to the end zone for Chicago to get points on the board.

For the Colts to win, meanwhile, they need to get wide receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne into the game early and often. Harrison, in particular, disappeared for most of the first half against the Patriots, and his team will need him and Wayne to pull the kind of double-moves at which they excel.

Chicago cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Nathan Vasher usually manage to hold their own against their opposition’s wideout corps, but Harrison and Wayne have exquisite timing with Manning and will prove a difficult test.

To add to the Bears’ problems, Indianapolis tight end Dallas Clark has been hugely impressive in the playoffs, with a team-best 17 receptions and a 16.5 yard receiving average, while tailbacks Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes continue to make big plays. Addai, especially, will be crucial to the Colts, having become the first rookie in NFL history to rush for at least 1,000 yards without starting a game. If he can help the Colts establish a running game, Manning will exploit it with play-action passes.

And, if the Colts can force Chicago to switch from their staple Tampa 2 to Cover 2 by pass-blocking well, Dallas Clark will have the opportunity to find the seams with Chicago especially vulnerable to tight ends without injured safety Mike Brown.

The Colts have, too, the NFL’s greatest clutch kicker to rely on. Adam Vinatieri has the most field goals in playoff history and is perfect so far in the post-season. While he’s yet to attempt a game-winning kick for the Colts, he’s unlikely to fail, should he get the opportunity.

And then there’s Manning. Of course, he has had post-season problems of his own in recent years, but, right now, he is smarter than ever, using a hurry-up, no-huddle offence to bewilder and tire defences and enable Indianapolis to exert their will over even the league’s toughest defences. They hammered the muscular Chiefs for 188 yards rushing and dominated against the Ravens, running 11 of their final 12 plays on the ground and eating up over seven minutes of game time on their way to victory.

With the duel between the two quarterbacks undeniably one-sided, the key battle is likely to be between Manning and Chicago’s middle linebacker, Brian Urlacher. Urlacher will be tasked with deciphering which of Manning’s audibles are authentic, while Manning must attempt to keep Urlacher off balance near the line of scrimmage.

With little, if anything, expected out of Grossman in this match, the pressure is on Peyton Manning to deliver. Currently believed to be the NFL’s best ever regular season quarterback, Indianapolis’ number 18 is certain not to miss this chance to rewrite his legacy with a precious Super Bowl victory.

Score: Colts 27, Bears 20.

And now for something completely ditzy...
January 30, 2007
With so many comments to yesterday's flag post, some of which required serious filtration, I've been preoccupied by thinking about these complex issues again today. So for today's instalment, let's change gears completely. To the lightest, fluffiest topic of all – Paris Hilton. Let me applaud whoever came up with the headline on the SMH homepage about Paris trying to shut down a website full of nude photos of her – "Paris seeks redress". Surely, people, racist rednecks and arrogant inner-city latte sippers alike can come together for that one universal goal – to laugh at Paris Hilton?
Apparently Paris was "shocked and surprised" that naked photos of her that were supposed to be in a storage locker were posted on the internet. Really? After people even hacked into her cellphone and put her nudie pics on the internet?

Okay, so you and I may have naively assumed that every extant image of Paris naked or having sex was already in the public domain. But Paris, surely, knew she had another cache of home-made porn out there. And for some reason, didn't destroy it. So really, what were the odds of it not getting an airing online? Paris, if you're reading, I'd henceforth work on the assumption that every image of you ever taken is going to wind up on the internet. So, like, um, maybe you might want to rethink your hobby of posing nude for the cameras? There are plenty of other, slightly less humiliating ways of embarrassing yourself – releasing another single, perchance?

So Paris, as always, is the big loser. But how about the folk who bought her stuff for $2775 and on-sold it for $10 million? Despite its ubiquity, Paris' lack of dignity certainly has a huge price. She really should just swallow what little presumably remains of her pride and become an adult star. I mean, by choice. At least she'd be the one making the money.

I am particularly amazed that the domain "parisexposed.com" was still available for the purchasers to set up the photos taken from Paris' storage locker. Surely, given her boundless penchant for scandal, all possible Paris domain names have now been taken by cybersquatters? I did a little test just now, and much to my surprise ParisIsTheAntichrist.com is still available – and surely a valuable investment given her career to date – but I bet that's it's just about the only Paris-related domain name still available.

Sadly for those folks who might have wanted to pay $39.97 to see what surely everyone with an internet connection is already sick to death of, the site's now been shut down. And you can guess its owners are in a bit of legal trouble. Presumably the copyright holder didn't consent to their publication (which, I believe, a separate legal issue to buying the items themselves.)

Now, here's where I tenuously, and ultimately unsuccessfully, link this issue to something more serious in an attempt to add gravitas to a frivolous post. Let us reflect. We treat refugees escaping from brutal regimes as if they're criminals, locking them up for months at a time, and yet we let Paris freely enter Australia whenever she feels like it. There's something seriously wrong with this country.

There's something seriously wrong

Paris Hilton is suing to shut down a Web site that's showing her personal photos, videos, diaries and other things she'd once kept at a storage facility.

ParisExposed.com was launched last week.

It says the items were auctioned off after Hilton neglected to pay rent to the storage facility. The site also promises that visitors who pay a fee of about $40 will get access to Hilton's passport, medical records and other legal documents.

Hilton says a moving company was supposed to have paid the fee to the storage facility. Her lawsuit says 2 people paid more than $2,700 for the contents of the storage unit and later sold the items for 10 million dollars to a third person who created ParisExposed.com.

Hilton's publicist says, in addition to shutting down the Web site, she wants her stuff back.

Gotham city has been given the royal treatment, hosting Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall who visited with society types and regular kids during their whirlwind stay.

Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, arrived in New York from Philadelphia by private train Sunday and toured the Harlem Children's Zone, which operates the Promise Academy charter school and a range of social services and programs dedicated to the enrichment of Harlem, reported the New York Post.

The children did their homework on the Prince and inquired about the Prince's pet corporation, the organic food company Duchy Originals.

The Ap reported Tiffany Vargas, 13, asked Charles if his multimillion-dollar line of organic foods, Duchy Originals, was on the stock market.

"No," he told her, "it's still a private company. We haven't got quite to that stage yet."

Afterward, the couple went on a Harlem must see tour, visiting the office building where former President Clinton has an office and the Hotel Theresa, where Cuban leader Fidel Castro stayed decades ago. They toured a health clinic where children, sitting at computers, learned about asthma.

Prince Charles even dribbled a bit of basketball and his second shot attempt hit the ring, drawing applause.

One student player, Mouhamed Mbaye, 14, said the school was lucky to have a royal visit. "Others schools the prince didn't (visit)," he said. "He decided to come here."

Arona Pratt, the mother of another player, said: "I think it's great. My son was up all night waiting for this. They looked much nicer in person than they do on TV."

Sunday evening, Charles received an award for his work on behalf of the environment attended by Meryl Streep, who ditched the SAG awards to help with the honors.

Former Vice President Gore presented Charles with the Global Environmental Citizen Award and praised the Prince of Wales' knowledge and passion, said he and the prince have had conversations about the global environment for 20 years.

Charles was "touched" at being honored by Gore.

"We had great fun talking about all these issues long ago," the prince said. "I've been so fascinated watching his career, and to receive this award from him really has been a particular privilege but also immensely special."

Charles and Camilla also visited Philadelphia's Independence Hall, their first trip to the city of brotherly love where Americans declared their independence.

Carmen Electra in porn movie!
Jan 24, 2007
Author: Paul Heath

Thought that headline would grab you! In fact, the sex tape scandal is part of a new movie role for Carmen Electra. She stars in a new British film as a porn star alongside PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN star MacKenzie Crook and comedian Jimmy Carr.

The film, called I WANT CANDY, tells the story of Joe and Baggy, who head to London to sell what they know is a script made of gold. They have a little trouble in finding someone to have faith in the script, but eventually meet a producer who will give them the money to make the film if they can cast Candy Fiveways, played by Electra, a legendary porn star. Marriage will not end Aishwarya's career
Subhash K. Jha [Sunday, January 28, 2007]
Email this article.

Mumbai, Jan 28 (IANS) When Aishwarya Rai got engaged to Abhishek Bachchan early this month there was widespread speculation about her future in filmdom. While her would-be in-laws say they have no problems with her continuing in films, some producers fear she may quit after marriage just like Jaya Bachchan did.

Jaya, after marrying Amitabh Bachchan, had quit films at the peak of her career to become a homemaker.

"Will Aishwarya continue to work after marriage? Didn't Jaya Bachchan give it all up at the peak of her career to be Mrs. Amitabh Bachchan?" one producer on the verge of signing her for a big action thriller seemed to express the entire industry's anxieties.

However, all speculation regarding Aishwarya's future in the movies can be laid to rest. The Bachchans have no intentions of stopping her from working.

"There's absolutely no talk of Aishwarya giving up her career. After 'Guru' she has entered a new performing peak. This is the time when she needs to build on her actor's image. There's absolutely no hint of a closure to her career after marriage, whenever that happens," a source close to the family told IANS.

Jennifer Lopez in fur coat - Madrid, Spain © Photorazzi

Perez Hilton has been alleging for awhile, and sightings of J Lo with Leah Remini, a Scientologist, furthered the rumor she was on her way to joining the spaceship cult.

"Alarms definitely started to ring when Jennifer Lopez became the latest member of TomKat's cult inner circle. You can't be Tom Cruise's friend without being a Scientologist...or at least being very exposed to the 'religion,' said Hilton on his blog.

Jennifer Lopez, fur loving fashionista, singer and actress may well be Scientology's next big tuna.

Talking to the media in Miami recently, J Lo talked about her fashion forward sense. "I just went for my own pleasure and what my husband likes," J.Lo told NBC 6's Jackie Nespral during an interview at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami on Thursday. "Of course I'm aware people will see it. As long as I feel good in it, that' s the most important thing."

Lopez also discussed the wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

"It was a great celebration of their love," she said. "It was good. It was beautiful."

When NBC 6 asked about what she thought about the negative perception some people have about Scientology, Lopez replied, "I, myself, am Catholic. But it's just sad that people would look at it (Scientology) in that way."

J.Lo also has a personal connection to the Church of Scientology.

"My dad has been a Scientologist for 20 years," she said. "It's weird people want to paint it in a negative way."

Conner Says Life Changed Post-rehab

Miss USA Tara Conner said she recognized she suffered "from the disease of alcoholism and addition" while in rehab in Pennsylvania.

"I didn't think I had any kind of issue going into rehab," Conner told People magazine. "But I've realized I do have an issue. I suffer from the disease of alcoholism and addiction."

The 21-year-old Kentucky native checked into a Pennsylvania treatment center in December after allegations of underage drinking and hard partying surfaced. She spent 31 days in treatment, and left the facility Jan. 21.

"My life has completely changed," she said in her interview. "I'm a completely different person out of rehab. Before I entered rehab I hardly knew who I was. I felt like I was floating and I just needed someone to pull me down."

Conner, who admitted taking her first drink at 14, almost lost her crown after the reports surfaced, but Donald Trump, co-owner of the Miss Universe organization, offered her a second chance provided she sought treatment.

It seems US teen queen Lindsay Lohan's stay in rehab for help with alcoholism might be just what the doctor ordered.

Reports say a friend of the 20-year-old actress is having a great time at the Wonderland centre.

"She's been sending text messages from rehab saying she's the happiest she has ever been. She seems under control right now."

But there are apparently some other rehab patients who aren't so happy with Lindsay, saying she's getting special treatment like shopping trips out of the facility and regular visits from a masseur, hairstylist and makeup artist.

But Lindsay's publicist says that's not true and Lindsay's taking rehab seriously.

"Lindsay is 100 per cent not getting special treatment. She's getting the same as everyone else. This isn't the Betty Ford Clinic; it's not a lockdown facility. There is personal time. All these nay-sayers who keep blogging and speaking out... they don't know what she's going through, they're not there. They shouldn't speak until they've gone through something like that."

A source close to Isaac Cohen has explained that Britney Spears “was joking” last week when she said that she and Isaac “weren’t together anymore“. The source told Us Weekly that the two have been dating for a month and are still going strong. Isaac echoed the sentiment by telling photographs earlier this week: “[Britney]’s the ultimate sweetheart.”
And speaking of Britney, Donald Trump has said he thinks it’s time she stopped partying and started working more seriously on her comeback. The tycoon has previously spoken out about Britney’s lack of career in relation to her estranged husband Kevin Federline but now he’s more adamant. He reportedly said recently: “She wanted some free time but now, Britney, it’s time to settle down and get back to work. It’s time to get back to being a mother and being a star.”
Renee Zellweger is reportedly very happy with Luke Perry because he’s self-confident. The two are rumoured to be dating after being spotted dining together recently. An inside source told the National Enquirer that Renee thinks she’s picked a good one this time: “Renee has been burned too many times by guys who are full of themselves… It’s a relief for Renee to be dating a guy who is comfortable enough in his own skin that he’s not turned off by her success.”

The couple split up briefly in November (06) because their respective careers in the US and UK kept them apart, but their love was too strong and now they are house-hunting in LA while Coyle enjoys a break from the girl band.

A source tells British newspaper The Daily Mirror, "Nadine sees LA as her permanent base now and she's actively looking for a home to buy with Jesse.

"He flew to Ireland to be with her for Christmas and she is staying with him until March when Girls Aloud start work again.

"She is only going to fly into the UK for promotional work. It's going to be tough for her and the group, but it breaks her heart to be away from him."

Park City, UT–The jury and audience award-winners of the 2007 Sundance Film Festival were announced January 27 at the Festival’s closing Awards Ceremony in Park City, Utah.

The films receiving jury awards were selected by distinguished jurors from films screening in the Independent Film Competition and the World Cinema Competition. Awards were given to both dramatic and documentary films screening in the four competitive categories: Documentary Competition, Dramatic Competition, World Cinema Documentary Competition, and World Cinema Dramatic Competition.

The films in these categories were also eligible for the 2007 Sundance Film Festival Audience Awards as selected by Film Festival audiences. The premier showcase for U.S. independent film, the Film Festival is an important new platform for international independent film and screens films that embody risk-taking, diversity, and aesthetic innovation.

In addition, the Shorts Jury awarded a Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking to a U.S. and international filmmaker. Other awards recognized at the ceremony include the recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Prize, awarded to a film which excels in addressing compelling topics in science or technology and the recipients of the Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award, created to honor and support emerging filmmakers with their next screenplays.

“The films in this year’s program have opened up the possibilities of what independent film can be and will be in the future,” said Geoffrey Gilmore, Director of the Sundance Film Festival. “The 2007 Sundance Film Festival award-winners reflect the talent, diversity, and evolution of independent film and exemplify
the artistic power of film to illuminate and explore issues that are prevalent in our global society.”

The Independent Film Competition is the heart and soul of the Sundance Film Festival program. It has introduced audiences to many of the best American and international independent films and filmmakers of the past 24 years. Films selected to screen in the Dramatic and Documentary Competitions were eligible for a number of jury awards.

The 2007 Sundance Film Festival Award-Winners are:

The Grand Jury Prize: Documentary was given to MANDA BALA (SEND A BULLET), directed by Jason Kohn. In Brazil, known as one of the world's most corrupt and violent countries, MANDA BALA follows a politician who uses a frog farm to steal billions of dollars, a wealthy businessman who spends a small fortune bulletproofing his cars, and a plastic surgeon who reconstructs the ears of mutilated kidnapping victims.

The Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic was given to PADRE NUESTRO, directed by Christopher Zalla. Fleeing a criminal past, Juan hops a truck transporting illegal immigrants from Mexico to New York City, where he meets Pedro, who is seeking his rich father.

The World Cinema Jury Prize: Documentary was given to ENEMIES OF HAPPINESS (VORES LYKKES FJENDER)/Denmark, directed by Eva Mulvad and Anja Al Erhayem. In ENEMIES OF HAPPINESS, Malalai Joya, a 28-year-old Afghani woman, redefines the role of women and elected officials in her country with her historic 2005 victory in Afghanistan's first democratic parliamentary election in over 30 years.

The World Cinema Jury Prize: Dramatic was given to SWEET MUD (ADAMA MESHUGAAT)/Israel, directed by Dror Shaul. On a kibbutz in southern Israel in the 1970's, Dvir Avni realizes that his mother is mentally ill. In this closed community, bound by rigid rules, Dvir must navigate between the kibbutz motto of equality and the stinging reality that his mother has, in effect, been abandoned by the community.

The Audience Awards are given to both a dramatic and documentary film in the Independent Film Competition as voted by Sundance Film Festival audiences.

The 2007 Sundance Film Festival Audience Awards for the Independent Film Competition are presented by Volkswagen of America, Inc.

The Audience Award: Documentary was given to HEAR AND NOW, directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky. Brodsky tells a deeply personal story about her deaf parents and their radical decision–after 65 years living together in silence–to undergo cochlear implant surgery, a procedure that could give them the ability to hear.

The Audience Award: Dramatic was given to GRACE IS GONE, directed by James C. Strouse. After learning that his wife has been killed in Iraq, a father finds the courage to tell his daughters the news during a quixotic road trip to an amusement park.

The World Cinema Audience Awards are given to both a dramatic and documentary film in the World Cinema Competition as voted by Sundance Film Festival audiences.

The World Cinema Audience Award: Documentary was given to IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON/United Kingdom, directed by David Sington. One of the defining passages of American history, the Apollo Space Program literally brought the aspirations of a nation to another world. Awe-inspiring footage and candid interviews with the astronauts who visited the moon provide unparalleled perspective on the precious state of our planet.

The World Cinema Audience Award: Dramatic was given to ONCE/Ireland, directed by John Carney. ONCE is a modern day musical set on the streets of Dublin. Featuring Glen Hansard and his Irish band "The Frames," the film tells the story of a busker and an immigrant during an eventful week as they write, rehearse and record songs that reveal their unique love story.

The Directing Awards recognize excellence in directing for dramatic and documentary features.

The Directing Award: Documentary went to Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine, directors of WAR/DANCE.

The Directing Award: Dramatic was presented to Jeffrey Blitz, director of ROCKET SCIENCE.

The Excellence in Cinematography Awards honor exceptional photography in both a dramatic and documentary film at the Festival. Heloisa Passos for MANDA BALA (SEND A BULLET) from the Documentary Competition and Benoit Debie for JOSHUA from the Dramatic Competition received the 2007 Cinematography Awards.

The Independent Film Competition Documentary Jury presented the Documentary Editing Award to editors Hibah Sherif Frisina, Charlton McMillian, and Michael Schweitzer for their work on the film NANKING.

The Jury for the Independent Film Dramatic Competition presents the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award for outstanding achievement in writing. The 2007 prize was given to James C. Strouse for GRACE IS GONE.

The Documentary Jury presented a Special Jury Prize to NO END IN SIGHT, directed by Charles Ferguson, “in recognition of the film as timely work that clearly illuminates the misguided policy decisions that have led to the catastrophic quagmire of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq.”

The Jury for the Independent Film Dramatic Competition also presented two special Jury Prizes. Special Jury Prizes for Acting were presented to Jess Weixler in TEETH “for a juicy and jaw-dropping performance” and to Tamara Podemski in FOUR SHEETS TO THE WIND “for a fully realized physical and emotional turn.”

The Jury also presented a Special Jury Prize for Singularity of Vision to Chris Smith, director of THE POOL.

The World Cinema Documentary Competition Jury presented a Special Jury Prize to HOT HOUSE/Israel, directed by Shimon Dotan.

The World Cinema Dramatic Competition Jury presented a Special Jury Prize to THE LEGACY (L’HERITAGE)/France directed by Géla Babluani and Temur Babluani.

The Shorts Jury presented the Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking to EVERYTHING WILL BE OK directed by Don Hertzfeldt.

The Jury Prize in International Short Filmmaking was given to THE TUBE WITH A HAT/Romania, directed by Radu Jude.

The Shorts Jury awarded Honorable Mentions in Short Filmmaking to DEATH TO THE TINMAN, directed by Ray Tintori; THE FIGHTING CHOLITAS, directed by Mariam Jobrani; MEN UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER BETTER (MARDHA HAMDIGAR RA BEHTAR MIFAHMAND)/Iran, directed by Marjan Alizadeh; MOTODROM/Germany, directed by Joerg Wagner; SPITFIRE 944 directed by William Lorton; and t.o.m./United Kingdom, directed by Tom Brown and Daniel Gray.

The 2007 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Awards were presented by Adobe Systems Incorporated. The Shorts Jury also presented a Special Jury Prize to the documentary short film FREEHELD, directed by Cynthia Wade.

Campbell says she's no witch
George Rush and Joanna Molloy Star Talk
Naomi Campbell called the other day -- no jokes about flying cell phones, please. The supermodel was a perfect lady, even as she made her complaints about newspaper stories in Brazil, England and here that she is interested in Brazil's African-based Candomble religion, which has rituals some have likened to witchcraft.

"I'm Church of England, Protestant. I was christened that," Campbell told us. "I went to a party for a guy whose birthday it was (Candomble priest Tuca Franchini).

"I don't discriminate against what religion people have. That's what he does, but it doesn't mean I have to be involved in it."

But Franchini told the press three years ago that Campbell had gotten tickets for him to a Macy Gray concert. Said Campbell: "I got 35 tickets for people, and I did the same thing for U2 and Lenny Kravitz.... I gave them to my girlfriend, and I don't know who she invited.

"I went to Rio last week for a meeting for Fashion Rocks, which will be there April 7. I'm on the committee. And I'm doing a documentary with Quincy (Jones) there. I was in Rio for 24 hours.

"I didn't know I was going to be made an ambassador for Rio at all. I was totally shocked when the mayor did offer that. I do have a charity there, 'We Love Brazil.' It's to help people in the favelas (ghettos). The women make crocheted fabrics, and designers from Brazil use them.

"It's been raining in Brazil for 26 days and hundreds of people have lost their houses. The charity gives to people who don't have anything."

We asked Campbell if it wasn't true that she clashed with a videographer.

"The video photographer, when I walked in, put the camera right at my head, so I told him, 'Don't hit me in my head.'

"I was at the party for an hour and 15 minutes, and I was on the dance floor. I wasn't hiding in a room."

The stunner, who was represented by top lawyer David Breitbart and has until May 21 to complete five days of community service for tossing a cell phone that hit her maid's head, told us:

"I'm remorseful and regretful. I'm trying to live my life and do some things for charity. I'm taking my punishment, and I accept that. I've accepted my responsibility and that's that. I have no idea what 'community service' I'll do. Whatever they tell me to do, I'll do with my integrity, and that's it."

(Los Angeles, California) Anne Heche and her husband are separating after five years of marriage, her spokeswoman has announced.

"They have requested that they be allowed their privacy at this time," publicist Lisa Kasteler said in a statement.

Heche, 37, and Coleman Laffoon, a motion picture cameraman, were married in September 2001. The couple have a 4-year-old son, Homer.

They met while working on a documentary about Ellen DeGeneres'' return to stand-up comedy.

Heche had a high-profile relationship with DeGeneres for more than three years. They announced their separation in August 2000.

Heche plays a relationship guru who relocates to Alaska in the ABC-TV drama "Men in Trees." Her film credits include "Wag the Dog," "John Q" and "Donnie Brasco."

Highlights of the SuperBowl -- the ads

By SETH SUTEL
AP business writer Saturday, January 27, 2007

[oas:casperstartribune.net/news/national:Middle1]
NEW YORK -- There's one place where you can find both FedEx, the overnight package delivery service, and "Fed-Ex," or Kevin Federline, the future ex-husband of pop diva Britney Spears. Both will be making appearances in Super Bowl ads, the highest-profile advertising event of the year.

FedEx Corp. is keeping mum about what its ad will look like, keeping up a tradition of ultra-secrecy that many marketers follow in hopes of building up the maximum amount of surprise during the game, which airs Feb. 4 on CBS Corp.'s CBS network. Advertisers want to get the most out of the huge cost of an ad in the big game, which is running as high as $2.6 million this year, up slightly from $2.5 million last year.

Federline will be poking fun at himself in a humorous spot for the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. under its "Life Comes At You Fast" campaign. Those spots, which have previously featured the supermodel Fabio and MC Hammer, will show Federline winding up working in a fast-food restaurant.

Humor and attempts to drive viewers to the Web, two themes from past years, are back again with some variations, and this year's Super Bowl commercials add a new twist -- viewer participation.

One of the biggest new themes of this year's game is getting amateurs into the act. General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet division ran a contest for college students to propose an ad that would be made by a team of professionals, and PepsiCo Inc.'s Frito-Lay unit will run an ad made entirely by an amateur contestant.

Meanwhile, Bayer Corp.'s Alka-Seltzer has a spot in the pre-game broadcast featuring the winner of a contest to come up with an updated version of its "plop-plop, fizz-fizz" jingle. The winner was Josh Anderson, a DJ at a radio station in Greensboro, N.C. The NFL also made an ad from an idea generated by a fan contest.

Many of the other spots made available for preview ahead of the big game show a decided shift to lighthearted, sometimes campy humor. That's in contrast with a number of ads last year that highlighted oddball violence, such as a female player in a touch football game getting clobbered with an illegal tackle.

Several marketers are trying even harder to use their ads to drive traffic to Web sites associated with their brands, such as Chevrolet's college-student contest and Nationwide, which posted outtakes from its Federline ad on its Web site.

Jo Ann Ross, the head of ad sales at CBS, says the spots have been selling well, and that several advertisers have inquired about making a tie-in with Black History Month in February, given that the coaches of both teams, for the first time, are black. "That is a very, very positive story," Ross said.

Ross said demand had been brisk for the ads, and the network was seeing strong interest following a highly rated AFC championship game and the recent announcement of nominations for the Academy Awards. "We're wrapping it up," she said.

It's been a busy few weeks for Ross and her staff, including a personal trip to Omaha, Neb. to seal a deal with infoUSA Inc., a marketing database company that is one of the first-time advertisers in this year's game.

Vin Gupta, the founder and CEO of infoUSA, said the Super Bowl represented a key chance to reach the 20 million sales people and 10 million small business owners that his company markets its services to. An excerpt of the ad provided by the company shows a successful salesman emerging from a snazzy new red sports car.

Among returning advertisers, Diamond Foods Inc.'s Emerald Nuts brand came up with new ads after innovative spots last year that turned the company's name into an acrostic-like word puzzle.

Emerald is hoping to generate even more interest in its ad, which features the actor Robert Goulet, by posting video clips on the video-sharing site YouTube. They feature humorous "victim testimonials" from people who didn't have Emerald Nuts handy at that key time late in the day when many people run low on energy.

Other big advertisers are also returning, including Anheuser-Busch Cos.' Budweiser and Bud Light brands, which are once again the game's biggest advertisers.

A look at key players in the Super Bowl
Published: Saturday, January 27, 2007 | 4:26 PM ET
Canadian Press: BARRY WILNER
MIAMI (AP) - Projected starters and key players for the Super Bowl:

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS OFFENCE

Peyton Manning (No. 18), QB, six onefive, 230 pounds, 9th year, Tennessee

The best quarterback of his generation finally reaches the big game ... A two-time MVP headed toward most NFL passing marks ... Struggled in first two playoff games, but Colts won, then had some big throws in leading comeback from 21-3 hole vs. Patriots in AFC championship game ... Had 101 passer rating this season, tops in the NFL, but rating is 66.8 in this month's playoffs ... Had 31 TD passes, only nine interceptions this season ... The biggest name in this game; how far would his stardom soar with a Super Bowl ring?

Joseph Addai (29), RB, 5-11, 214, 1st year, LSU

In a season highlighted by superb rookies, Addai was one of the best ... Replaced Edgerrin James, who left for Arizona as free agent, and rushed for 1,081 yards, seven TDs and a 4.8 average. Also caught 40 passes ... Has run very well in playoffs, looking fresh. Gained 217 yards in three post-season games, with two scores, and has 12 receptions ... First-round pick, 30th overall.

Dominic Rhodes (33), RB, 5-9, 203, 6th year, Midwestern (Texas) State

Hoped to be featured runner with James gone, and started most games, but Addai has become first choice ... Still, Rhodes will get plenty of work. He's had 41 post-season carries to 57 for Addai and is averaging 4.7 yards, nearly a full yard more than the rookie ... Also a good receiver and can return kicks.

Marvin Harrison (88), WR, 6-0, 185, 11th year, Syracuse

The All-Pro is one of the sport's elite wideouts ... He's also the anti T.O., doing his job quietly and with class ... Harrison and Manning form the most prolific pass-catch combination in league history with 106 TDs in regular season, but only two in 12 career playoff games. Harrison has 878 catches from Manning for 11,908 yards, both all-time highs ... Harrison had 95 receptions for 1,366 yards and 12 TDs in 2006. But in Colts' playoff surge Harrison has only 10 receptions and no TDs. Is a breakout coming vs. Bears?

Reggie Wayne (87), WR, 6-0, 198, 6th year, Miami, Fla.

In some ways, he's become more dangerous than Harrison, although not quite as reliable ... Some defences will double team both Wayne and Harrison nearly every play ... Has 15 catches and a TD in playoffs after 86 for 1,310 and nine scores during season ... Brother died in auto accident in September, and Wayne has played brilliantly to honour his brother.

Dallas Clark (44), TE, 6-3, 252, 4th year, Iowa

Manning's No. 1 target in playoffs with 17 catches for 16.5-yard average and has been key receiver on third downs ... Returned from knee injury to blitz Chiefs, Ravens and Patriots in playoffs ... Had only 30 catches during season, but four TDs ... Very elusive for a guy his size, and an efficient blocker .. If he matches up with Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs, could be classic confrontations.

Tarik Glenn (78), LT, 6-5, 332, 10th year, California

Has made three straight Pro Bowls ... Steady blocker, a main reason Manning was sacked just 15 times during the season ... Not an elite left tackle, but a dependable one.

Ryan Lilja (65), LG, 6-2, 290, 3rd year, Kansas State

Became a starter in Game 11, but also didn't play in five games in '06 ... Was regular throughout 2005 ... Claimed on waivers after being cut by Chiefs in September 2004 ... Has been inconsistent.

Jeff Saturday (63), C, 6-2, 295, 8th year, North Carolina

Like his counterpart with Chicago, Olin Kreutz, Saturday is among the best centres in football ... Smart, adaptable, he keeps up with Manning's varied instructions at the line ... Gets a good surge off the snap and can get to linebackers ... Will start in the Pro Bowl.

Jake Scott (73), RG, 6-5, 295, 3rd year, Idaho State

Started every game and improved from previous year ... A fifth-round pick in 2004 (141st overall) who has panned out well ... Also can play tackle ... First started as a rookie and played both sides.

Ryan Diem (71), RT, 6-6, 320, 6th year, Northern Illinois

Started 15 games ... Plays hurt despite history of nagging injuries ... Became starter as as rookie in 2001 and has been in the lineup ever since ... Powerful and more nimble than size might indicate.DEFENCE

Robert Mathis (98), DE, 6-2, 245, 4th year, Alabama A&M.

Small for the position, yet stays in on running downs ... Quick off the snap with a nice burst to the ball ... Led team with 9½ sacks, in part because he doesn't get same attention as Dwight Freeney ... Recovered two fumbles this season and forced four ... Had 90 tackles.

Anthony McFarland (92), DT, 6-0, 300, 8th year, LSU

Came from Tampa Bay in trade, but was disappointment for much of year ... Colts struggled versus the run during regular season in part because McFarland couldn't control line of scrimmage ... But he and team have improved in post-season ... Had 45 tackles, 2½ sacks.

Raheem Brock (79), DT, 6-4, 274, 5th year, Temple

Underrated tackle who fits nicely in Tony Dungy's defence ... Can make plays in the backfield as well as at the line ... When he matches up with Kreutz it could be a key ... Finds the ball, had three fumble recoveries during season. Also forced three fumbles and had three sacks.

Dwight Freeney (93), DE, 6-1, 268, 5th year, Syracuse

The star of the line, even if his numbers were not spectacular ... Will give John Tait and other blockers fits ... Explodes off the line in passing situations, needs to be more stout against the run ... A three-time Pro Bowler (not this year), had 5½ sacks among his 45 tackles and forced four fumbles ... Rex Grossman must always be aware of him.

Rob Morris (94), 6-2, 243, 7th year, BYU

Former starter at middle linebacker and team's top pick in 2000 draft, he has been backup for most of last two seasons ... Replaced Gilbert Gardner in lineup for Game 14 this season ... Not real quick for the position, but smart and understands defences and coverages ... Also started twice in middle in '06 because of injuries ... A special teams standout.

Gary Brackett (58), MLB, 5-11, 235, 4th year, Rutgers

Improved in first three seasons, became a regular in 2005, but '06 was a struggle ... Part of Colts' inability to stop run was his mediocre play, but he's come on in playoffs ... Had 123 tackles and forced two fumbles in regular season, but overran or was blocked out on other plays ... If he plays in Super Bowl as he has last three weeks, though, Colts should be OK.

Cato June (59), OLB, 6-0, 227, 4th year, Michigan

Emerged as a Pro Bowler in 2005, wasn't near that level this time ... Numbers looked good (162 tackles, three INTs, two forced fumbles and a recovery), but impact wasn't as heavy ... Like Brackett and many other defenders, has stepped it up in playoffs ... No one on defence except perhaps Freeney is more capable of big plays.

Nick Harper (25), CB, 5-10, 182, 6th year, Fort Valley State

Long-time starter who some thought would be beaten out by Marlin Jackson this season ... Made 73 tackles and three INTs and has a pick in playoffs ... His confrontations with Muhsin Muhammad and Bernard Berrian could be pivotal.

Antoine Bethea (41), SS, 5-11, 203, 1st year, Howard

Yet another rookie find this season ... Sixth rounder beat out touted Mike Doss, then moved to free safety for four games before settling back at strong spot ... Excels in run support, was third on team with 105 tackles ... Should be an anchor in secondary for years.

Bob Sanders (21), FS, 5-8, 206, 3rd year, Iowa

The key to the defence with his gung-ho style ... Fears nothing, will take on 300-pounders if necessary to make a tackle ... Plagued all season by injuries, got healthy for the playoffs after slow recovery from knee surgery ... A Pro Bowler in '05 who has showed why in the playoffs ... Leads Colts with 19 post-season tackles, has an INT ... His meetings with Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson could be memorable.

Jason David (42), CB, 5-8, 180, 3rd year, Washington State

Another smallish DB who makes up for his height with aggressiveness ... Still, he's not great cover guy ... Becamse starter midway in rookie season and has remained in lineup ... Doesn't hold onto the ball, which has limited his interceptions ... Muhsin Muhammad could give him fits.SPECIAL TEAMS

Hunter Smith (17), P, 6-2, 209, 8th year, Notre Dame

One of those indoor punters who always has nice numbers ... Colts don't cover punts particularly well, so Smith must keep the ball away from Devin Hester ... Good athlete with size.

Adam Vinatieri (4), PK, 6-0, 202, 11th year, South Dakota State

Merely the best pressure kicker in the game, perhaps ever ... Has two Super Bowl-winning field goals for New England ... Holds career mark for post-season field goals with 37, including five for all the points in win at Baltimore this year.

Terrence Wilkins (10), KR, 5-10, 180, 6th year, Virginia

Averaged 24.5 yards on kickoff runbacks and 9.2 on punt returns. Not quite in Devin Hester's class, but not shabby ... Broke one punt return for a TD, 82 yards against Jacksonville ... Gambles a bit too much and can make shaky decisions.

-CHICAGO BEARS OFFENCE

Rex Grossman (8), QB, 6-1, 217, 4th year, Florida.

Much criticized, but has made some big plays to get Bears this far ... Injury prone until this season, when he started every game and threw for 3,193 yards and 23 TDs ... Inconsistent, sometimes makes poor decisions, had 20 interceptions in '06 ... Won't match Manning's production, but if he avoids mistakes, he could help Bears to first NFL championship in 21 years.

Thomas Jones (20), RB, 5-10, 215, 7th year, Virginia

Former first-round pick (Arizona 2000) who has become a top runner in Chicago after three seasons with Cardinals, one with Bucs ... Signed as free agent with Bears in 2004 ... Has rushed for 948, 1,335 and 1,349 yards in three seasons with Bears ... Had monster game with 123 yards and two TDs in NFC title win over New Orleans ... Also an accomplished receiver who made 36 catches this season ... Had four 100-yard games in 2006.

Cedric Benson (32), RB, 5-11, 220, 2nd year, Texas

Fourth overall draft pick in 2005 who has not been able to grab starting spot from Jones ... Will play significant role in Super Bowl, probably get a dozen or more carries ... Has more power than Jones, but not very elusive ... Sometimes will play two or three full series, then sit out a quarter or more ... Rushed for six touchdowns ... Had first 100-yard rushing game of career in season finale with 109 vs. Green Bay.

Jason McKie (37), FB, 5-11, 243, 5th year, Temple

Yes, players from Temple actually can prosper in the NFL ... Unselfish blocking back who started 12 games, clearing paths for Jones and Benson, protecting Grossman ... Made only eight carries, but did catch 25 passes ... Recognizes and handles blitzes well ... Spent one season with Dallas before joining Chicago.

Desmond Clark (88), TE, 6-3, 249, 8th year, Wake Forest

Former Broncos and Dolphins tight end who found a home in Chicago ... Had 45 catches, tied for team lead with six TDs ... Dependable, but not a deep threat or a game breaker ... Averaged solid 13.9 yards per catch, will be a challenge for Colts linebackers and safeties.

Bernard Berrian (80), WR, 6-1, 185, 3rd year, Fresno State

Speedy receiver with good size ... Scored spectacular 33-yard TD vs. Saints ... Had six TD catches during season and has two in post-season ... Averaging 19 yards a catch in playoffs ... Can return punts if necessary ... Will be a touch matchup for Indy's cornerbacks.

Muhsin Muhammad (87), WR, 6-2, 215, 10th year, Michigan State

Played in 2004 Super Bowl with Panthers, joined Bears as free agent in 2005 ... Led team with 60 receptions, had five TDs and 863 yards receiving ... Not a deep threat, but will go over the middle and uses size well ... Can take a hit ... Hands are a bit inconsistent ... Had three 100-yard receiving games ... A good blocker on running plays.

John Tait (76), LT, 6-6, 312, 8th year, BYU

Former Kansas City lineman who signed with Chicago in 2004 as restricted free agent ... Has started every game he's played since 2000 ... Can play right tackle, too ... Has been steadier blocker for Bears than he was for Chiefs.

Ruben Brown (74), LG, 6-3, 300, 12th year, Pittsburgh

Spent first nine seasons with Buffalo, then signed with Bears as free agent in 2004 ... Has started all 37 games he's played in for Chicago ... Uses leverage well and is hard to fool ... Has been to eight Pro Bowls, heads to Hawaii for this year's game, too.

Olin Kreutz (57), C, 6-2, 292, 9th year, Washington

All-Pro centre who has made six Pro Bowls ... Hasn't missed a game since 2002 ... Tough, smart and aggressive ... Clearly the leader of the OL ... Could overmatch Colts' DTs.

Roberto Garza (63), RG, 6-2, 305, 6th year, Texas A&M-Kingsville

Former Falcons lineman who signed as free agent with Chicago in 2005 ... His addition upgraded the unit significantly ... Has also played centre in pro career ... One of 19 Hispanic players in NFL, has worked with Hispanic youngsters in football camp ... Fluent in Spanish.

Fred Miller (67), RT, 6-7, 314, 11th year, Baylor

Longtime starter with Rams and Titans ... Won 2000 Super Bowl with St. Louis ... Bears will try to run behind him ... Has started all 31 games he's played for Chicago.DEFENCE

Adewale Ogunleye (93), DE, 6-4, 260, 5th year, Indiana

A good player for Dolphins, even better in third season with Bears ... A leader who makes big plays ... Led Bears with 12 quarterback hits and recovered three fumbles. Aded 6½ sacks ... Also efficient against the run; he is not one-dimensional ... His matchup with Ryan Diem could be a key.

Tank Johnson (99), DT, 6-3, 300, 2nd year, Washington

Had troubled December ... Was arrested Dec. 14 after police raided his home and found guns and ammunition. It was his third arrest in 18 months ... His bodyguard was shot and killed in a nightclub with Johnson in attendance ... Was granted permission by judge to leave Illinois for Super Bowl while he awaits trial on gun possession charges ... Served one game suspension from team for off-field problems ... Started 14 games, had 3½ sacks and 38 tackles.

Ian Scott (95), DT, 6-3, 302, 3rd year, Florida

Solid player who started seven games ... Clogs the middle and can push the blocking pile ... Gets his hands up to block passes ... A key to shutting down Indy's run game, but he's not close to level of injured starter Tommie Harris.

Alex Brown (96), DE, 6-3, 260, 4th year, Florida

Often mentions Gators' BCS crown and desire to add Super Bowl ring for championship double ... Had two INTs to go with 71 tackles and seven sacks ... Also forced three fumbles and recovered two ... Really established himself this season ... Can rush from the inside if needed.

Mark Anderson (97), DE, 6-4, 255, 1st year, Alabama

Rookie who brings pass rush heat, had 12 sacks, a team rookie mark and tops among first-year players in NFL ... Was responsible for sack and fumble that resulted in 25-yard loss for Saints in NFC championship game ... Had 48 tackles and four forced fumbles, excellent for a part-timer ... Colts must block him effectively on passing downs.

Lance Briggs (55), OLB, 6-2, 240, 4th year, Arizona

An unrestricted free agent after this season and a guy the Bears need to keep ... A Pro Bowl linebacker who has really developed in last two seasons ... Had career-high 176 tackles, second on team ... Very good in pass coverage ... Excels at stripping the ball, had four forced fumbles in 2006 ... Might wind up covering Dallas Clark, one of the game's best matchups ... Had seven games with at least a dozen tackles.

Brian Urlacher (54), MLB, 6-4, 238, 7th year, New Mexico

Best middle linebacker in football ... Perennial All-Pro got four votes for Defensive Player of Year award ... Active, fast, smart, hits like a freight train ... Led team in tackles for sixth time with 185 ... Great in pursuit to either side of field ... Struggled a bit when star DT Tommie Harris went down, but really came alive in NFC title game ... One thing he doesn't do is get sacks, but he does get pressure when he rushes ... The passionate leader of Bears.

Hunter Hillenmeyer (92), OLB, 6-4, 238, 4th year, Vanderbilt

Considered the weak link in linebacking corps when season began, but has been solid ... Expecting him to be another Urlacher or Briggs is unfair ... Started last 10 games ... Won't have big role in pass coverage ... Finished season with 68 tackles.

Charles Tillman (33), CB, 6-1, 196, 4th year, Louisiana-Lafayette

His 88 tackles ranked third on team ... Finds the ball, had five interceptions, tying for team high ... Two of his INTs came off Tom Brady ... Good in run support ... Bears aren't afraid to match him up against top wideouts ... Missed last two regular-season games with back problem, returned for playoffs.

Chris Harris (46), SS, 6-0, 205, 2nd year, Louisiana-Monroe

Lost starting free safety spot, but took over as started at strong safety in Game 12 ... Not nearly the player defensive leader Mike Brown is; Brown was lost for season in sixth game ... Was inactive for four games ... Had two INTs this season ... Sixth-round draft pick who started 13 times as rookie ... Could see a lot of dangerous Dallas Clark.

Danieal Manning (38), FS, 5-11, 196, 1st year, Abilene Christian

Rookie who moved into starting lineup in Game 3, supplanting Harris ... Had INT vs. Brett Favre in first NFL game ... Finished with two INTs and four forced fumbles ... Had 80 tackles, fourth on team ... Taken in second round, 46th overall, out of NCAA Division II school ... No relation to teammate Ricky Manning Jr.

Nathan Vasher (31), CB, 5-10, 180, 3rd year, Texas

Confident cover guy who finds the ball ... Had fumble recovery, interception and five tackles in NFC championship game ... Matches up for size and speed well with Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne and could get some man-to-man assignments on them ... Missed two games in December with hamstring problem.

Ricky Manning Jr. (24), CB, 5-9, 188, 4th year, UCLA

Not a starter, but an impact player ... Had big role in helping Carolina win NFC title in 2003 as a rookie ... Talkative and entertaining, very confident ... Had career-high five interceptions, tying for team lead ... Ran INT 54 yards for touchdown vs. Minnesota ... Could see lots of action against pass-prone Colts.SPECIAL TEAMS

Brad Maynard (4), P, 6-1, 186, 10th year, Ball State

Veteran who has played for Giants and Bears, punted in 2001 Super Bowl ... Ranked 11th in NFL with 37.6 net yards average; team covers his kicks well ... Has had only five blocked kicks in career, none this season ... Should do well with directional punts in Dolphin Stadium.

Robbie Gould (9), PK, 6-0, 183, 2nd year, Penn State

All-Pro kicker who made team-record 32 of 36 field goals, all 47 PATs and scored 143 points, most by a kicker in NFL ... Hit 49-yarder in overtime to beat Seattle in playoffs ... Not intimidated by bad conditions ... Also has done well on kickoffs.

Devin Hester (23), KR, 5-11, 186, 1st year, Miami, Fla.

Only rookie to make All-Pro team ... Set NFL record with six kick returns for TDs, including 108-yarder on missed FG to tie longest play in NFL history ... Will handle punt and kickoff runbacks ... Averaged 12.8 yards per punt return (3 TDs), 26.4 on kickoff runbacks (2 TDs in same game, at St. Louis) ... Also can play some DB.

Actors Guild Awards may be the key to Oscar victories

Screen Actors Guild Awards
Oscar watchers narrow list of top film nominees
Mirren nominated in Oscars indicator
LOS ANGELES - It is a question sometimes asked with scorn in the film industry: Who cares what actors think? Right now, the answer is maybe all of Hollywood.

The 13th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards tomorrow have assumed more importance than usual this year because a surprise snub of a major film at the Oscar nominations created a wide open race for best picture.

This means that the SAG awards, normally a clubby affair that never receives terribly high ratings, have a chance to make a difference in the key battle at the Feb. 25 Oscars.

The same thing happened last year when SAG actors chose Crash over the heavy favourite Brokeback Mountain for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. Crash then went on to win the Oscar for best picture.

SAG members this year get to choose between five films for best ensemble performance in a motion picture: Babel, Bobby, The Departed, Dreamgirls and Little Miss Sunshine.

By omitting Dreamgirls from its list of films nominated for best picture, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sent shock waves through the industry.

Many experts expected Dreamgirls to not only get nominated but to win the Oscar for best picture.

Now the experts are looking to the Screen Actors Guild for guidance.

SAG voters will not necessarily go for Dreamgirls. SAG members form the biggest voting bloc among Oscar voters and one can assume that Dreamgirls would have won a nomination for best picture if it had strong actor support.

This leaves four films, of which three are rated with the best chance of winning the top SAG award -- The Departed, Babel and Little Miss Sunshine. Bobby, a tale of the assassination of Bobby Kennedy, which received poor reviews and did badly at the box office, but has plenty of winning performances.

Babel, a tale of the globalisation of pain and suffering, was shot in four countries in five languages with few professional actors. One of its performers is up for best supporting actress, Rinko Kikuchi.

The Departed, a cops and robbers film directed by Martin Scorsese, features a cast of Hollywood heavyweights, including Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio.

And Little Miss Sunshine boasts an actors' dream story -- it took six years to get made and stars a host of dedicated journeymen burning up the screen. For SAG members, those actors' stories could be their own.

The front-runner in the race for best actor is Forest Whitaker, who plays the late Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland. Leading the contest for best actress is British veteran Helen Mirren for her work as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.

Both are considered shoo-ins for victory and losses could create waves.

Jennifer Hudson, the singer who is brutally cut loose in Dreamgirls, and Eddie Murphy, who plays a singer going from riches to rags in the same film are favoured to win the best supporting actor awards.

Movie Review: Smokin'Aces

If ever there was a film to shock us out of the January blahs, (see Ann’s ode to the 'January Blahs' here) its ‘Smokin’ Aces.’

With as much nerve as Crank and a bigger budget, Carnahan’s blood soaked morality tale is tight. Keeps the adrenaline pumping as the body count climbs.

Buddy ‘Aces’ Israel (Jeremy Piven), a Las Vegas magician and mob puppet, knows a lot, enough to know he is in danger. The feds want him for themselves; he’ll rat out the mobsters to avoid prison. Convictions stemming from his testimony will have a domino effect that will ultimately destroy the mob in America. That’s the plan, according to the good guys (Ray Liotta and Ryan Reynolds to name a couple).

Israel’s mob mentor has put a $1-million plus heart bounty out, to ensure silence. The heart is proof he is dead and gone and no more trouble. The feds have plants inside, relaying information regarding Israel’s fate.

So Israel and his bodyguards head to a penthouse suite in Lake Tahoe to enjoy one final bacchanalia before he becomes federal property, protected by an army of security and federal agents.

Naturally, when word gets out that there is a cool million to be made for a simple hit, the country’s leading assassins show up. And what a pack of wolves they are. Armed to the teeth, evil written all over them (literally in some cases) and bloodthirsty, the race is on to get Buddy.

Jason Bateman was born to play Rip Reed, a lawyer who is certainly ripped and will not shut up. He looks good in a bra and panties and refuses to let our attention flag.

The first casualties are apparently witless bail bondsmen (Peter Berg and Ben Affleck) struck down by the hilariously over the top Tremor Boys. Straight out of Road Warrior, these are clearly worshippers of early Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

A lesbian assassin team big momma, sexy girl and radical (Davenia McFadden, Alicia Keys and Taraji P. Henson) are the best prepared of the bunch – carrying missile launchers and a solid plan, they’ve got Israel covered, from his floor to a hotel window across town.

Meanwhile a Russian operative manages to replace Israel’s butler inside the suite and a big, threatening towheaded Swede is on his way. There’s a psycho lunatic boy of about nine chop-sockying his way into the mix with a guy the Tremors should have checked twice.

Eternal TV mobsters David Proval and Alex Rocco, Matthew Fox, Andy Garcia and Common confirm the beauty of this cast list . Even Wayne Newton shows up.

One delicious surprise after another, except towards the end the taste of blood is a little too strong – it dominates the many other notes. Violence is overplayed and hurts the film by providing an easy out. The film deserves a better demise. More time, a little more thought and this could have been a killer. Okay, it wouldn’t have been Shakespeare, but who cares?

And Piven shows what he can do, like break our hearts as the guy in the middle.

Beckham gets on his high horse for Disney campaign
Ben Hoyle

David Beckham’s latest advertising campaign suggests that he will have little difficulty fitting in with the Hollywood crowd when he joins his new club, LA Galaxy, this summer.

Two weeks after announcing his record-breaking £128 million deal with the US football club, Beckham was revealed yesterday to be one of three celebrities who are promoting Disney theme parks.

The other two are Beyoncé Knowles, the pop singer and star of the Oscar-nominated film Dreamgirls, and the actress Scarlett Johansson.

Knowles, 25, is featured as Alice in Wonderland, sitting in a whirling teacup. Johansson, 22, appears as Cinderella, wearing a custom-designed Nicoletta Santoro gown and a 62-carat diamond tiara by Harry Winston worth £165,000.

Beckham is the heroic Prince Phillip, from Sleeping Beauty. Annie Leibovitz, who took the portaits, described him as “a very determined actor”.

Beckham, 31, said during the shoot, at the Spanish resort of Burguillo Lake, near Madrid: “There were many Disney characters I liked as a kid. Now my sons love the Disney characters and it’s a big part of their lives, a big part of many children’s lives around the world. So to be part of that is an honour and very exciting.”

The campaign is promoting Disneyland and the Year of a Million Dreams campaign by Walt Disney World, in which the resorts are giving away a million prizes.

Beckham, who has sponsorship deals worth an estimated £10 million with Gillette, Pepsi, adidas, Motorola and Volkswa-gen, will have no shortage of celebrity friends in California. He said that he had taken advice from the actor Tom Cruise before agreeing the move to Los Angeles.

Bottled Water for $90

VIDEO REPORT
BEVERLY HILLS, CA (Reuters) - Regular bottled water is, like, so yesterday.

Enter Bling H20 Beverly Hills, California. Luxury water...that, let's face it, it will end up very pricey.

Tap water's free, bottled water's a few bucks...but this pimped out bottle's 50-60 bucks, and up to 90 dollars at the club, that's, like 4 dollars a sip. But it's so now. Paris Hilton even gave her dog some...after having the Swarovski crystals customized for her little chihuahua Tinkerbell.

A tourist said, "It just says 'Bling beverages Beverly Hills,' I don't know if any waterfalls or springs in Beverly Hills that would produce really great water, so it sounds like it comes from the tap or something."

Duh, of course it's not from the tap. It's from Tennessee, from an award winning spring that is said to have perfect pH balance and a, like, totally sweet taste.

Bling's founder hopes that regular folks who like to spend money and celebs will gulp down the latest product offered in the uber-rich celebrity marketing machine.

Kevin Boyd, Bling H2O founder said,"If you really think about it, there's no difference in going to a nightclub and having a 350 dollar bottle of fancy vodka, or having a 50 dollar bottled water in your hand. The perceived value is probably about the same."

Bling's founder knows that dropping all those coins for a bottle of water isn't for everyone...but that's why he says other people can drink the Bling out of a plastic bottle and still feel like a superstar.

Serena's tears for sisterCarly Crawford

Article from: Sunday Herald SunFont size: + -
Send this article: Print Email
COMEBACK queen Serena Williams destroyed Russian favourite Maria Sharapova to claim the Australian Open title yesterday in an emotional win set to silence her critics.

The American champion wept as she dedicated her stunning straight-sets victory to her late sister Yetunde Price, who was shot dead in 2003.
"She's always believed in me," Williams said.

Holding the cup aloft, she cried as she paid tribute to the half-sister slain in a Los Angeles drive-by shooting.

"I would like to dedicate this win to Yetunde. She is not here, I love her so much," Williams said.

"A couple of days ago, I said if I won this, it is going to be for you, so thank you."

Yetunde, a nurse, had been a personal adviser to Serena and sister Venus as they travelled the world on the professional tennis tour.

She was gunned down near a suspected drug house in the crime-plagued suburb of Compton, where the family once lived.

The tragedy has stalked Williams ever since.

Her proud mother Oracene Price, watching from the player's box, was touched by the surprise dedication.

"I didn't know she was going to make me cry like that. But that's life . . . sorry," Ms Price said, dabbing a tear with her finger behind dark glasses.

"That really affected Serena a lot for a long time. Who wants to go play after something like that? Today was a special moment."

Williams, whose interests outside tennis include acting and fashion designing, has endured a barrage of criticism in recent years from those questioning her commitment to the sport.

She entered the tournament ranked 81 in the world and, at odds of $26, was a long shot for the title.

Yesterday, she savoured her 6-1, 6-2 annihilation of top seed Sharapova in 63 minutes.

Lohan's publicist defends rehab behaviour
Saturday, January 27 2007, 16:45 GMT

By Daniel Kilkelly

Photorazzi / Janet Mayer
Lindsay Lohan's publicist has insisted that complaints about the actress's time in rehab are unwarranted.

The Mean Girls actress checked into the Wonderland centre in Los Angeles earlier this month but has since been criticised by fellow residents for allegedly treating the facility like a hotel. A make-up artist, masseur, and hairstylist are said to visit Lohan regularly, and she has also been allowed to continue working on her latest movie during her spare time.

"Lindsay is 100 per cent not getting special treatment. She's getting the same as everyone else. This isn't the Betty Ford Clinic, it's not a lockdown facility. There is personal time," publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnick told WENN.

"All these naysayers who keep blogging and speaking out... they don't know what she's going through, they're not there. They shouldn't speak until they've gone through something like that."

British soccer player David Beckham was given the part of one of Disney’s most recognizable characters, Prince Phillip from "Sleeping Beauty."

A new Disney campaign featuring celebrities depicts David Beckham, who recently announced his move to Los Angeles, as a dragon-slaying prince in a series of photos taken by acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz.

"I'm really delighted to be part of the 'Where Dreams Come True' campaign," said Leibovitz. "We live in difficult times and I feel, especially as a parent, that keeping dreams alive is one of the most important things we can do."

The international football star, marketing giant and fashion icon was photographed at a lake near Madrid riding a white horse and fighting a fire-breathing dragon.

"There were many Disney characters I liked as a kid," Beckham said in a statement released by Disney.

“I'm the prince, and I'm sort of slaying a dragon, which is something I've never done before, obviously. When I was called about it and asked to do it, I was very honored and really looking forward to it, especially with Annie doing the pictures... The role's reversed now. It's my sons that love the Disney characters and, you know, it's a big part of their lives; a big part of many children's lives around the world," justjared.com quoted him, as saying.

The shots are part of Disney’s advertising campaign for its theme parks, “Year of a million Dreams,” and include other stars like Scarlett Johansson as Cinderella, Beyoncé taking a spin in a giant teacup as Alice from "Alice in Wonderland," singer Lyle Lovett as the March Hare and actor Oliver Platt as the Mad Hatter.

The pictures will be published in magazines such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, GQ, W, The New Yorker, Conde Nast Traveler and Cookie, in March.

Annie Leibovitz revealed that Beckham had been the perfect choice for once he got on the steed, he "became the Prince".

"It seemed perfect for David Beckham, who is a very masculine hero. Saving Sleeping Beauty came natural to him. He's a determined actor, and he became the Prince when he got on that white horse," she said.

"I think he would like to act... he was a great actor. He took it very seriously... and I love that," Leibovitz added.

In the Leibovitz photos, taken in December, 22-year-old Scarlett Johansson can be seen running down a flight of stairs as the clock strikes midnight with her glass slipper unknowingly left behind. The tagline reads, "Where every Cinderella story comes true."

Beyonce appears in a spinning teacup alongside Oliver Platt as the Mad Hatter and Lyle Lovett as the March Hare. The tagline reads, "Where Wonderland is your destiny."

"It's two great imaginations coming together – Disney and Annie Leibovitz," said Lovett. "To be along for the ride really is quite something, just knowing that you're going to be part of a great Disney character. And then when you step into the imagination of Annie Leibovitz, you know you're in another world."

Super Bowl Ads Return to Humorous Roots

By SETH SUTEL
The Associated Press

NEW YORK
There's one place where you can find both FedEx, the overnight package delivery service, and "Fed-Ex," or Kevin Federline, the future ex-husband of pop diva Britney Spears.

Humor and attempts to drive viewers to the Web, two themes from past years, are back again with some variations, and this year's Super Bowl commercials add a new twist - viewer participation.
